DR. DAVID TOM

 

Dr. Tom is a vitreo-retinal surgeon and former NASA research engineer. He is an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his medical and surgical fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. Dr. Tom served his residency in ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine after receiving his medical degree from George Washington University. Prior to medical school, Dr. Tom graduated from the University of Maryland with an M.S. in Electrical Engineering, specializing in laser and semiconductor physics.
 

Dr. Tom has authored numerous publications in scientific journals and textbooks. His caring and compassionate nature is coupled with unique and innovative techniques such as the ophthalmic endoscope, infrared diopexy, submacular surgery, and the Lincoff balloon for the repair and treatment of retinal diseases, tumors and detachments. A recognized expert in the field of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Dr. Tom is the principal investigator in several clinical trials for both the dry and wet forms of macular degeneration. He leads one of the top recruiting centers in the country for the most promising investigational studies for macular diseases. Dr. Tom’s other fields of interest and research activities include the early detection and treatment of ocular complications from diabetes. He was the coordinator of a multi-center study for the New York Diabetic Retinopathy Group and he is an investigator for the Protein Kinase Vitrase Study for diabetic retinopathy.

He was elected to the prestigious American College of Surgeons.
