Dr. David Tom, MSc, FACS

This former NASA engineer is one of Connecticut’s leading vitreo-retinal surgeons.
David Tom, MD, MSc, FACS, completed his medical and surgical retina fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. After receiving his medical degree from George Washington University, he served his residency in ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine. Prior to attending Medical School, Dr. Tom graduated from the University of Maryland Masters of Engineering Degree Program. Dr. Tom is currently an assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Yale University School of Medicine and has been Board Certified in Ophthalmology since 1998.
Dr. Tom has authored numerous publications in scientific journals and textbooks. His caring and compassionate nature is coupled with unique and innovative techniques: the ophthalmic endoscope, infrared diopexy, submacular surgery, and the Lincoff balloon, are among the procedures he performs. Dr. Tom is a recognized expert in the field of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Dr. Tom started one of the largest retina Clinical Trial programs in the Northeast at NERA. He has been a principal investigator in numerous national and international trials that have led to FDA-approved treatments for retinal diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Retinal Vascular Occlusions and Diabetic Macular Edema. He continues to lead in prospective new clinical studies, enabling NERA patients to gain access to the new potential treatments, often years before available to the general public. Dr. Tom’s other fields of interest and research includes the early detection and treatment of ocular complication arising from diabetes.
Dr. Tom is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialist, Connecticut Society of Eye Professionals and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Tom was elected to the prestigious American College of Surgeons. Dr. Tom has received the peer nominated Castle Connolly National Physician Award for Clinical Excellence for six consecutive years. Most recently Dr. Tom was named one of Connecticut’s Best Doctors by Connecticut Magazine 2018, and nominated for recognition as a Top Doctor in Marquis Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
