David Tom, FACS, M.D.

We are privileged to have Dr. David Tom as part of our team at New England Retina Associates. He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our practice. Dr. Tom completed his medical and surgical retina fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, after obtaining his medical degree from George Washington University. He further honed his skills through a residency in ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine.

Before pursuing his medical career, Dr. Tom graduated from the University of Maryland's Masters of Engineering Degree Program. Currently serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Tom has been board certified in Ophthalmology since 1998.

Dr. Tom's contributions to the field of ophthalmology extend beyond his clinical practice. He has authored numerous publications in scientific journals and textbooks, showcasing his dedication to advancing knowledge in the field. His innovative techniques, including the use of the ophthalmic endoscope, infrared diopexy, submacular surgery, and the Lincoff balloon, demonstrate his commitment to providing unique and effective treatments to his patients. Dr. Tom is particularly recognized for his expertise in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

As a pioneer in clinical trials, Dr. Tom initiated one of the largest retina Clinical Trial programs in the Northeast at New England Retina Associates. He has served as a principal investigator in numerous national and international trials that have led to FDA-approved treatments for retinal diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Retinal Vascular Occlusions, and Diabetic Macular Edema. Dr. Tom's dedication to advancing the field is evident through his ongoing leadership in prospective clinical studies, which provide our patients with access to potential new treatments years before they become available to the general public. His research also focuses on the early detection and treatment of ocular complications arising from diabetes.

Dr. Tom is an esteemed member of professional organizations such as the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Connecticut Society of Eye Professionals. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was elected to the prestigious American College of Surgeons. Dr. Tom's outstanding clinical skills have been recognized by his peers, as he has received the Castle Connolly National Physician Award for Clinical Excellence — 6 years in a row! Additionally, he was named one of Connecticut's Best Doctors by Connecticut Magazine in 2018 and has been nominated for recognition as a Top Doctor in Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
